Research Overview
Education
and Research are the two fundamental and highly synergistic
pillars of AIT’s activity. AIT academics perform leading
edge research and thus, remain at the forefront of
technological and scientific evolution. Research results and
technological advancements are exploited by AIT to
continuously enrich the offered curricula, and also used by
the AIT faculty to update and enhance the educational
content of their courses. This constant updating of the
educational material with research results and technological
innovation stemming from research performed across the world
is a unique and most valuable feature of the AIT
establishment.
AIT performs research in a number of carefully selected
research areas that have significant scientific challenge,
interest and potential. The main goal of the activity is to
make substantial scientific contributions in the targeted
areas and to establish AIT as a leading research center in
Europe. Research results are being communicated to the
scientific community through an extensive list of
publications to international and high quality journals and
through presentations to highly reputed conferences and
other scientific events. They are also being communicated to
industry for exploitation towards new products and services;
and to the society in general through AIT’s educational
efforts in the context of degree, professional or lifelong
learning programs.
The dynamic research activity of AIT has resulted in the
formation of significant and valuable synergies with
academic institutions, corporate R&D labs, and industry, has
promoted the scientific and technological image of the
establishment and has contributed to making AIT known
through innovation, excellence and professionalism.
Five “umbrella” technological areas of research activity
have been selected as the focal points of AIT research.
These areas are:
1. Autonomic and
Grid Computing, performing research on Multimodal
Technologies and Perceptual Interfaces, Autonomic Middleware
for Perceptual Systems, Cognitive Systems and Grid
Computing.
2. High Speed
Networks and Optical Communications, having as main
research dimensions All Optical Network Technologies,
IP/Optical and Wireless/Optical Convergence, Storage
Networks, Network Control and Management, QoS, Network
Services and Applications (Content Distribution, VoIP, VoD…).
3.
Broadband Wireless and Sensor Networks, focusing on 4G
Communications, Sensor Networks, Broadband Radio Interfaces,
Wireless Multimedia Communications, Smart Antennas.
4. Software
Engineering and WEB Applications, having as main
research dimensions Software Systems, Middleware and
Distributed Computing, Programming Languages, Semantic WEB
and WEB Service Technologies and Applications including
eLearning, eGovernment, eCommerce, Policy-based Systems.
5.
Algorithms and Security, pperforming research on
Combinatorial Optimization and Heuristics, Algorithms for
Sensor Networks, Cryptography and Computer and Network
Security.
Groups of very competent academics, each with a very solid
research and technological background, have been formed to
perform research and address the innovation challenges of
each of the above research areas. Their work is supported by
state of the art laboratories.
Research activity is partly funded by EU and National
research support frameworks. AIT participates in a number of
very ambitious and successful collaborative research
projects. AIT has been very active and successful in forming
winning consortia and making significant scientific
contributions in running projects. In this context, AIT has
established strong collaborations with major players in the
areas of its expertise; the trust placed on AIT by such
partners is a significant measure of AIT’s recognition by
the wider research community.
