The Group has up to now invested substantial research and development efforts towards implementing an advanced e-learning Web-based platform featuring integrated synchronous and asynchronous modes of learning and collaboration tools (a/v conferencing, chatting, forums, e-mails), single sign-on capabilities, communities support, Webcasts, Whiteboard, role-based authorization, user/group administration, LMS/LCMS features such as course catalogues, course configuration and packaging, rich-media course material support, tagging, scheduling and notification, security and rights management, etc.

The vision in this area is two-fold:

  • To advance the e-learning platform with further innovative features, such as Web-based synchronous virtual labs and simulators, more advanced collaborative spaces among remote student communities and academic institutions, Web-based desktop sharing, etc. and develop relevant platform components and tools.

  • To deploy the platform capabilities in real-life application contexts and prove its added value.

The position thus requires a thorough understanding of and specialization in these technologies and learning practices, including:

  • In depth familiarity with e-learning technologies and relevant systems (e.g. Learning Management/Learning Content Management systems) and current advanced e-learning practices.
  • Software design and development skills (mainly web development and multimedia technologies know-how) and proven experience in Web applications programming

A set of mandatory tasks to be carried out include:

  • Development and maintenance of multimedia Web portals and integration with AIT’s advanced e-learning platform
  • E-learning courses preparation, structuring and publishing on the e-learning platform.
  • Courses/Users/Groups administration and maintenance.
  • Research and further development of AIT’s e-learning platform, tools and functionalities.

In addition to the above minimal set of requirements, the following qualifications/ expertise will be favorably considered:

  • A PhD (preferably) in Computer Science/Engineering and desirable specialization in the above described areas.
  • Academic or industrial experience in Web and Multimedia Technologies as well as e-Learning related areas.
  • Teaching experience.

Graduate students with a relevant M.Sc. degree who want to continue their careers towards a Ph.D. degree are also welcome to apply. Fluency in English and Greek is expected.

Responsibilities for this position further include:

  • Conducting research in the related fields leading to publications in top international journals and conferences.
  • Help in the development of the Multimedia, Knowledge and Web Technologies lab, and setup of prototypes and demonstrations for promotion purposes of the e-learning platform and related developed tools.
  • Development of new R&D proposals and projects and assistance in technology transfer activities of the group towards Greek companies interested in deploying the developed technologies and tools for their own purposes.
  • Assistance in internal AIT/Group administration activities as well as teaching assistance in the context of relevant AIT post-graduate courses.

Interested candidates are requested to send a letter of interest, a detailed CV, names of references and a letter describing their research interests and goals, to:

2.Call for Research Scientist

The Algorithms & Security group is seeking to hire a Research Scientist for the needs of the 3-year European project LOTUS (LOcalisation of Threat substances in Urban Society). The concept and objectives of the LOTUS project are to create a system by which illicit production of explosives and drugs can be detected during the production stage. The demonstration system will be based on mobile devices mounted in law enforcement and/or other vehicles under community control. Findings from these devices (type and amount of substance, position and time) will be sent using GSM communications to an operations center display unit where data will be collected and evaluated for further action.

Role of AIT in LOTUS
Investigation and implementation of efficient algorithms and protocols for establishing secure communications between nodes and the information system data collection center or between the nodes themselves. Provision of system security against eavesdropping or feeding false information into the network; robustness against traffic analysis attacks. Design and evaluation of new cryptographic primitives suitable for nodes with constrained resources will be made.
Given the above description of basic tasks, the ideal applicant should have:

  • In depth familiarity with cellular communications technology standards: GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications); GPRS (General Packet Radio Services).

  • Background on GPS (Global Positioning systems) standards and technologies

  • Background as a developer of applications using available GSM technology. Programming knowledge is required.

  • Familiarity with mobile phones, GSM cards and cellular telecommunications infrastructure equipment.

  • Strong background in security related issues in order to integrate security into the above communication systems.

The project requires a thorough understanding of these technologies, including computer software and engineering, in order to network all tracking devices securely, possibly including GPS positioning, into a usable information system. In addition to the above minimal set of requirements, the following will be favorably considered:
  • A PhD (preferably) in Computer Science/Engineering.
  • Academic or industrial experience in Security related issues.
  • A good publication record that demonstrates a clear knowledge of the field and in particular security of wireless/ad hoc/telecommunication networks.
  • Teaching experience.
  • Fluency in English and Greek.

Responsibilities for this position also include:

  • Conduct research in the related fields leading to publications in top international journals and conferences.
  • Help in the development of the security lab that can be used as a demo room for various technologies (smart cards, biometrics, sensors, RFID’s, etc…)
  • Develop new R&D projects and participate in technology transfer to Greek companies to foster links between the academic and the business world.
  • Provide reasonable administrative service to the School for the duration of the project including teaching assistance support for various AIT courses.

Interested persons may send a letter of interest, a current CV, names of three references and supporting documents by December 1, 2008, to:

AIT is undergoing a major faculty expansion and is seeking nominations and applications from  outstanding individuals with innovative research programs and a strong interest in teaching. AIT is currently offering the MSIN graduate program in collaboration with the INI of Carnegie Mellon University. It also offers two other graduate programs, the MSITT and MBIT. We are interested in applicants both at the tenure-track Assistant Professor level as well as at senior tenured levels. The applicants must hold a doctoral degree in Electrical / Computer Engineering or Computer Science. Applicants in all areas are encouraged to apply and will be considered; however, preference will be given to candidates in the areas of Embedded and Autonomous systems, Networking, Telecom Systems, Software Engineering and RF Electronics.
Candidates are expected to develop a strong research agenda and maintain excellence in teaching. They should send a curriculum vitae, copies of representative publications, names, addresses and phone numbers of three or more references to the AIT's Dean. Electronic submissions and inquiries may be made at itom@ait.edu.gr. Applications will be processed as they are received and continue to be considered until all positions are filled.

Faculty members are professors, who join AIT as resident tenured or tenure-track ones, as well as a number of instructors and lecturers, who in general hold a Ph.D. degree and are involved in the educational and research activities of AIT.

All AIT professors hold a Ph.D. degree and have a solid research and teaching background. Senior Professors, after joining AIT, take the adjunct Professor status of Carnegie Mellon. Younger Professors are asked to spend a time period at Carnegie Mellon in order to acquire the adjunct Professor status.

AIT is actively recruiting Professors in all the disciplines it covers. The selection is based on high academic standards, in compliance with the relevant Carnegie Mellon procedures and is subject  to Carnegie Mellon approval. The selection of the faculty members follows strict academic practices and complies with the code of ethics generally set by Carnegie Mellon and other world-class Universities.

The faculty has full academic freedom in teaching and research. The general professorship appointment at AIT requires the teaching of 2 –3 semester courses per year. Faculty members conduct advanced research and lead scientific teams working for that purpose. They also undertake some academic administrative work.

To accommodate teaching needs of the MSIN program AIT is inviting distinguished professors to teach specific courses. They are on a non-resident status and they usually spend a semester or more at AIT, teaching a course as well as performing research.
