The 2010 Summer School was titled ‘Pervasive Networks and the Web of Things” and took place June 28 to July 09 2010, at the AIT premises in Peania. Twenty participants from 6 countries (Armenia, China, Greece, India, Jordan  and Serbia) had the opportunity to attend a balanced mix of courses, laboratory activities, social events, excursion programs and visits to the INTRACOM group of companies. The seminars were addressed mostly to students and professionals from computer science, computational science, engineering and application backgrounds. Top-notch students were awarded scholarships. Two Jordanian students were awarded Queen Rania Scholarships.

The program was structured into two weekly modules:

  1. The Web of Things, which covered Emerging distributed computing paradigms, Cloud computing, sensors’ signal processing (with emphasis on A/V processing), The semantic web, RFID systems and applications, Context aware computing, as well as other technologies underpinning the Web of the Things.

Among the highlights of this year’s Summer School were speeches given by iSquare and Great Apps executives, on the 30 years of Apple Innovation and iPhone Application Development respectively, as well as OTEGlobe’s invited speaker (Dr. Vayias) who illustrated how Greece acts as a telecommunication bridge for South Eastern Europe.

The Summer School’s social program included swimming events in Varkiza, social dinners, visits to the Acropolis Museum and a one day trip to Aegina. Social events created a warm, friendly and collaborative atmosphere among the participants.  Overall, participants expressed their satisfaction in attending a high quality summer school which also included a rich variety of social activities.

Students' Views

"My advice to current and future students at AIT is to join only if technology and networking are passions. Do not feel down if the first semester seems hard and impossible to go through. Once you're at the graduation ceremony, rest assured you would have reached a very high and privileged milestone, and that your efforts will be rewarded, and that AIT's investment in you will never go unnoticed. My classmates and I work in various companies around the globe, and we are known to solve almost any problem we are up against."
