Networks and Optical Communications

Research Topics

The primary objectives of the NOC group are to:

  • Perform research on high-speed, high-capacity network service protocols and architectures
  • Study and develop novel network architectures and innovative transport solutions for telecommunication services and grid computing applications
  • Promote new application specific product opportunities in cutting edge technologies
  • Perform techno-economic studies for broadband networks

The group maintains a broad range of research activities and technical expertise supported by a state-of-the-art laboratory that provides innovative research activities on optical communications. The work carried out within the AIT’s NOC group is focused on optical network infrastructures for existing and future broadband networks and services in access, metro and wide area networks. Specific areas of interest include novel architectures for circuit-, burst- and packet- switching, optical system and subsystem design, signalling and routing protocols, network resilience, service aware network design and traffic engineering, advanced transmissions and switching techniques, and techno-economic studies.

The expertise of AIT’s NOC group in the field of transparent networks and high speed signal propagation and processing is proven through a number of journal publications as well as invited talks in major international conferences in optical communications. Moreover relative activities in the general field of optical networking studies, design and evaluation are carried out through a number of EU projects where the NOC group is actively participating, (EU-FP7 projects DICONET, SARDANA and APACHE, EU-FP7 NoE BONE and EuroFOS, EU-FP6 projects PHOSPHORUS and TRIUMPH). In all of these projects the NOC group has a leading role either as a Technical leader or Work Package (WP) leader.

Senior researchers with many years of industrial experience and a solid research background form the core of the group. Also a number of scientists from other companies/universities are collaborating with the group on a part-time basis. The group has a total of 5 permanent senior members (Dr. Ioannis Tomkos, Dr. Dimitrios Klonidis, Dr. Kostis Kanonakis, Dr. Yvan Pointurier) specializing in different areas of optical communications and high-speed networking. The members of the group are internationally recognized researchers that have published more than 300 publications in international journals, magazines and conference/workshop proceedings. In addition to the scientific publications, the members of the group have co-authored numerous technical reports in areas related with their field of expertise. Our work has been sited in more than 600 publications. Finally the members of the group have two patents issued, four patent applications published and several other patent applications pending. It is also worth pointing out that members of the group participate in the Technical Program Committees of the major international conferences in telecommunications/networking (OSA/IEEE OFC, ECOC, IEEE ICC, IEEE Globecom, IEEE ICTON and others).

AIT’s NOC group has strong relationships with the global optical networking industry and the Greek telecom industry. Additionally, AIT maintains close ties and has established partnerships with a large network of Academic Institutions, Corporate R&D Labs and Industrial affiliates worldwide. The group is actively pursuing collaboration with other partners in the framework of EU and national projects.

"I enrolled in the MSc in Information Networking (MSIN) program which although was very demanding gave me a great opportunity to enrich my knowledge in information networking. The high quality of knowledge offered both from Carnegie Mellon and AIT (local faculty), and the great AIT infrastructure (labs, facilities) are the primary reasons that make me feel very lucky and proud of being a part of such a program and I would propose to anybody with a background in computer engineering."

Athanasios Barlas, MSIN 2006 (Greece)

"It is not the solution all of us to go abroad" said Mr. Robby Bourlas, Managing Director of the Public, Multirama and getitnow.gr addressing to 44 students representing Greece, Cyprus, Jordan, Romania, Malawi, and Armenia, graduated with a MSc in Management of Business, Innovation & Technology (MBIT) from AIT. "You can still find business opportunities in Greece, as long as you believe it. In a difficult period like the one we live in, it is just harder to find these opportunities."
