Networks and Optical Communications

Infrastructure

The NOC group is equipped with advanced laboratory and software tool facilities.

Laboratory equipment:
The main experimental infrastructure of AIT’s NOC group is its fully equipped transmission test bed able to support both 10 Gbit/s and 40 Gbit/s facilities within a recirculating loop that is configured to emulate the concatenation of optical components, subsystems and systems as well as long transmission distances.
The transmission test-bed is equipped with:

  •  80 laser sources at 50 GHz spacing in the C-band as well as 40 sources at the L-band,
  • different types of transmitters including: Directly Modulated Lasers up to 2.5Gb/s, Intensity Modulators MZM and EAM up to 10Gb/s, Phase modulators up to 40Gb/s, DQPSK modulator up to 40Gb/s, Integrated DFB-EAM transmitters up to 10Gb/s
  • a variety of fibre types (SMF, LEAF & Truewave), including the appropriate DCF modules
  • test and measurement equipment for 10Gb/s BER measurements, optical spectrum and network analyzers
  • tunable mode locked laser for 10GHz pulse stream generation and OTDM for up to 160Gb/s pattern generation
  • amplification over both C- and L-band as well as Raman amplification,
  • passive components for wavelength multiplexing, filtering and signal monitoring
  • 10Gb/s forward error correction module,
  • FFE/DFE electronic equalization module, and
  • additional active components like SOAs, 8x8MEMS switches, mechanical switches and VOAs

Software simulation tools:
For the transmission and networking theoretical studies the NOC group utilizes a number of commercially available tools as well as custom made algorithms.
The simulation tools and licences include:

  • VPI transmission software for optical system simulations, architectures and networks design including self developed algorithms in matlab for co-simulation,
  • VPI transport software for technoeconomic analysis of broadband networks including also advanced spread sheets in Microsoft Excel for cost analysis purposes
  • OPNET licences for networks and protocols design with self developed algorithms in C++.

"AIT was a perfect place that has the atmosphere one needs, where I spent most of my time and staff were really helpful and approachable. You can ask anyone for help and they’ll do all they can to help. It’s been an amazing experience where I’ve worked closely with experts who helped me to broaden my knowledge and be exposed to the areas of research and information technology industry. I knew that having such an experience would then help me to be able to go on and focus on an area that really interests me."

AIT Alumni Club has 44 new members!
2012-03-16

"It is not the solution all of us to go abroad" said Mr. Robby Bourlas, Managing Director of the Public, Multirama and getitnow.gr addressing to 44 students representing Greece, Cyprus, Jordan, Romania, Malawi, and Armenia, graduated with a MSc in Management of Business, Innovation & Technology (MBIT) from AIT. "You can still find business opportunities in Greece, as long as you believe it. In a difficult period like the one we live in, it is just harder to find these opportunities."
