Broadband Wireless & Sensor Networks

Overview

The mission of the "Broadband Wireless & Sensor Networks" (B-WiSE) group is to contribute to the “Optimally Connected Anywhere, Anytime” global vision by directing its research and educational activities toward the study, development and system level evaluation of Wireless Systems and Networks
The vision of "Optimally Connected Anywhere, Anytime" has energized the global telecommunications, information technology and semiconductor industries. The realization of that vision though hinges upon the integration of an unprecedented number of heterogeneous wireless access technologies to support in a synergistic way different service requirements and radio environments. They may include the personal level (Personal/ Body Area / Ad Hoc Network), the local / home level (WLAN, Sensor nets/Zigbee, NFC), the cellular level (3G+, LTE Advanced, Vehicular Networks) and the wider area level (WMAN, DxB-T, BWA).
The involved research team consists of professors and senior researchers with many years of industrial experience in the development of high performance ICs for communication systems and networks and a solid research background in a diverse number of fields ranging from multimedia signal processing to information theory and statistical communications.

Objectives:

The objectives of the B-WiSE group are:

  • To be recognized as a leading research and education center for broadband access, mesh and sensor wireless communications in the greater region of SE Europe and the world
  • To enable the development of novel applications and products through the transferring of key, innovative technology to our industrial partners
  • To maintain a self-sustained research activity and promote external collaborations

Students' Views

"I enrolled in the MSc in Information Networking (MSIN) program which although was very demanding gave me a great opportunity to enrich my knowledge in information networking. The high quality of knowledge offered both from Carnegie Mellon and AIT (local faculty), and the great AIT infrastructure (labs, facilities) are the primary reasons that make me feel very lucky and proud of being a part of such a program and I would propose to anybody with a background in computer engineering."

Athanasios Barlas, MSIN 2006 (Greece)
