AIT and Columbia's Earth Engineering Center workshop on Sustainable Waste Management

4 July 2012

On June 18-22 and for the first time in Greece, the international workshop "Sustainable Waste Management" was organized by AIT, the Earth Engineering Center (EEC) of Columbia University and WTERT-Greece (SYNERGIA) at AIT’s premises . The main objective of the program was to examine the latest technologies for sustainable management of solid waste focusing on Renewable Energy.

Sixty seven executives from Greece, Belgium, Serbia, Jordan, Lebanon, UAE, Palestine and Azerbaijan active in the waste management industry came together for five days at AIT and focused on the new practices, environmental benefits , impact and economic viability of recycling, energy from waste, mechanical-biological treatment, composting and landfill. The large number of participants in the program underlines the increasing need for cutting-edge education on the latest technologies for sustainable waste management. Said Dr. Gregory Yovanof, AIT Vice Dean, "the program focused on the base of the sustainable waste management hierarchy pyramid, particularly on issues regarding recycling, energy recovery and environmentally friendly waste management."

Sustainable Waste Management Keynote Speakers were the world renowned:

  • Emeritus Professor Nikolaos J. Themelis, Columbia University, Director Earth Engineering Center
  • Professor Carlo Vandecasteele, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven

"AIT was a perfect place that has the atmosphere one needs, where I spent most of my time and staff were really helpful and approachable. You can ask anyone for help and they’ll do all they can to help. It’s been an amazing experience where I’ve worked closely with experts who helped me to broaden my knowledge and be exposed to the areas of research and information technology industry. I knew that having such an experience would then help me to be able to go on and focus on an area that really interests me."
